StarkWare, an Ethereum scaling initiative, has open-sourced the StarkNet Prover in an effort to make the technology public and boost the transparency of its code.
The prover is an essential component of the StarkNet, an Ethereum Layer 2 scaling network based on the ZK-STARKs technology. The prover is in charge of producing cryptographic proofs in order to reduce transactions and improve the efficiency of Layer 2 scaling.
The open-sourcing of the StarkNet Prover allows more people to review the code, which aids in the detection of flaws and increases transparency. According to the team, this move is also seen as a beneficial step toward further decentralization of the StarkNet.
“This marks a big milestone towards scaling Ethereum and cryptography, as STARK technology becomes a publicly available resource,” said Eli Ben-Sasson, co-founder of StarkWare and co-inventor of ZK-STARKs, of the open-sourcing.
StarkNet was released in alpha form on the Ethereum mainnet in November 2021, and the StarkWare team has steadily open-sourced pieces of the StarkNet stack since then, including the Cairo 1.0 programming language, Papyrus client software, and the StarkNet sequencer. According to the team, today’s move marks the completion of open-sourcing the whole StarkNet software stack.
