Samsung Is Going Into The Hardware Sector Of The Metaverse

The introduction of a VR headgear may be imminent after Samsung, the Korean electronics manufacturer, disclosed it is developing its own metaverse and extended reality technology. The device will be created in collaboration with Google and Qualcomm, according to TM Roh, president of Samsung’s mobile experiences unit.

Samsung, the Korean smartphone manufacturer, has announced that it will soon enter the market for metaverse and VR (virtual reality) headsets. The corporation said that it is already working on “extended reality” gear, implying the manufacture of a VR headset.

TM Roh, Head of Samsung Mobile Experiences, stated that such a gadget is in the development, but did not provide a release date. He did, however, mention Qualcomm, a fabless semiconductor producer, and Google as partners. Roh told The Washington Post on February 1st:

Many different companies … have been making these announcements about different realities, so we have also been making similar preparations, no less than any others.

Ro claimed that Samsung had delayed its entry into the market because the market was still not ready and other similar gadgets launched by competition had not met with the predicted success.

Additional VR Devices

Samsung joins the ranks of manufacturers who have already released metaverse devices, such as Meta and HTC, as well as those who aim to do so in the near future, such as Apple. According to Ro, Samsung’s new device will be powered by a Qualcomm chip specifically engineered to perform better in virtual reality applications, and will run a Google-powered operating system.

Samsung’s ambition to enter what appears to be a crowded industry could be a response to a shift away from traditional smartphones and toward something greater. Another phone firm, Nokia, predicts that metaverse technology will replace smartphones in the second half of this decade.

In contrast, Ro believes that this new family of gadgets poses no threat to what smartphones already offer. He stated, “

Smartphones will continue to build on the features and the needs of consumers and will provide even more new experiences.

According to Roh, the metaverse and cellphones can be integrated to supplement their experiences and grow from there. Samsung’s participation with the metaverse is not new; the company has already invested in projects in the field.
